Threads and forum channels
Every text and announcement channel has threads: “Create thread” on a message (or the “Threads” list of the channel) starts a sub-conversation whose messages stay messages of the channel, so threads of encrypted channels are end-to-end encrypted with the channel’s keys, titles included. Forum channels hold posts only (title, first message, tags the channel’s managers define); announcement channels let only members with Manage messages post, everyone else reacts and replies in threads. Members follow the threads they start or write in; only followed threads count towards their unread badges and notifications. The node archives threads without a message for a channel’s “Auto-archive” time (default 7 days) in its hourly housekeeping; a new message reopens them unless a moderator locked them. Permission bits: Create threads (everyone by default) and Manage threads (rename, archive, lock, delete others’ threads; granted once at the upgrade to every role that could manage messages). Nothing needs configuring (PROTOCOL.md §7e).
