Your data

Your account and what belongs to it live on your home node. You can see what it stores, download it and delete your account yourself, at any time.

Open the account menu (your avatar at the bottom of the sidebar) and choose Legal & privacy → My data. Show summary lists what your home node stores about you: your profile, devices, rooms, applications with access, the other nodes your data was shared with through sign-ins and conversations, and how long the node keeps what. Download my data saves everything as a file.

The My data section of the profile settings with a summary of what the node stores about the account, by category, and a button to download all of it.
Your data: a summary of everything the node stores about you, and a full export.

The contents of encrypted conversations are not part of the download, because the node cannot read them.

Under Legal & privacy → Delete account… you delete your account on your home node right away and are signed out everywhere. Your profile, devices and keys, sessions, backups, friends and applications are always deleted. Your messages stay visible as “Deleted user”, without your name or picture, unless you tick Also delete my messages and files.

  • If you still own rooms, hand each one to another member or delete it first.
  • The node admin can undo a mistaken deletion for a while (30 days on a node with the default setting). After that your username becomes free again.
  • Other nodes are asked to delete your data as well; they decide themselves.

Every node can publish an imprint, a privacy policy and terms of service. You find them under Legal & privacy in the account menu and on the sign-in page. When the terms change, the app asks you to read and accept the new version.

Legal and privacy: the node's documents and any notices about your content.

If you come across content that is illegal or breaks the terms, a node can offer a public notice form. Its address is in the node’s legal pages; for a single message you can also use Report in its menu.

Some nodes ask for your date of birth to enforce a minimum age and rooms for adults. It is stored only on your home node and never shown to anyone. Other nodes only learn whether you are 18 or older.
